The project
TapTap for Capitec Bank
01 · Overview
TapTap is a peer-to-peer mobile payment system powered by Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), which makes it safe and simple to make and receive in-person mobile payments. The project was developed under the Lipa Payments development team.
02 · The challenge
Financial services demand uninterrupted service and strong security. On top of that, the product had to make and receive payments over Bluetooth rather than NFC, so it would work on the phones most South Africans actually own.
03 · The result
- Tap-on-phone: a payment SDK that lets small merchants accept contactless card payments directly on a smartphone, without expensive payment devices.
- Proximity payments: anyone can make and accept payments to anyone nearby over Bluetooth. The experience feels like Apple Pay or Samsung Pay, but it does not need an NFC sensor, so it works on low-end smartphones.
